It is a tremendous honor to be joining the Newburgh district and the Newburgh Free Academy team on July 1, 2012. In my role as Executive Principal of NFA, I truly look forward to serving the students and families of Newburgh and its adjoining communities. In anticipation of beginning our work this summer, I am confident that the next school-year will be an exciting and rewarding one!      With much appreciation,           Maxine Nodel

     As of September 2010 Newburgh Free Academy opened its door as a grades 9-12 high school and welcomed approximately 3,600 students in grades 9-12 within two campuses. To best meet the needs and interests of our students NFA runs by a house plan. The intent of the house plan is to provide students with the comforts of a small school learning environment and still have the benefits of what a large comprehensive high school can provide.

      Students: It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 20ll-2012 school year at Newburgh Free Academy. Our goal at NFA is to provide all students with the highest quality comprehensive education in a safe and pleasant environment. Whether you are a sophomore, junior or senior familiar with NFA or a new student walking our halls for the first time as a freshman, we are certain you will find this school year exciting, challenging, and rewarding. As you begin the school year, remember to set your goals high, maintain your path, and never give up. High School will only be done once so make it memorable and set your path for your future endeavors.

     Also, keep in mind what NFA can offer you. We encourage you to become an actively involved student both in your academics and extracurricular activities. Take advantage of the numerous clubs, activities, and sports teams offered here. Be sure to watch GBTV in your homeroom to see announcements regarding dates and times of all club activities and sports meetings.

NEWBURGH STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN NANOSCALE PROGRAM AT SUNY ALBANY
Recently, students returned to SUNY Albany to complete their projects. At the culminating event, students had dinner with their parents and invited guests, displayed their work, and received certificates for the outstanding participation in the program.



NFA JUNIOR ROTC CADETS HELP BEAUTIFY NEWBURGH'S DOWNING PARK
Recently, Newburgh Free Academy Junior ROTC students participated in a community service initiative at Downing Park in Newburgh. The twenty-five year long tradition, to help keep the park clean, involves cadets participating in one cleanup event in the fall and one in the spring.



IBM SPECTRUM DIVERSITY NETWORK GROUP VISITS NFA NORTH SCIENCE STUDENTS
Recently, members of the IBM Spectrum DNG, a Black Diversity Network Group within IBM for the East Fishkill and Poughkeepsie IBM sites, visited students at the Newburgh Free Academy North Campus.

NFA SOLAR RACING TEAM NAMES 2012 SOLAR PROTOTYPE CHAMPION OF THE AMERICAS
The Newburgh Enlarged City School District is proud to announce that the Newburgh Free Academy Solar Racing Team participated in the 2012 Shell EcoMarathon in Houston, Texas from Thursday, March 29, until Sunday, April 1, 2012, resulting in the NFA Solar Racing Team becoming the 2012 Solar Prototype Champion of the Americas.



NFA HOSTS “PAYING HOMAGE TO OUR LOCAL LEGENDS”
Students from Newburgh Free Academy recently celebrated African American heritage and honored local legends during the 2012 African American History Celebration, “Paying Homage to Our Local Legends”, held in the Newburgh Free Academy Auditorium, on Wednesday, March 7, 2012.



NFA’S EMPTY BOWLS RAISES MONEY FOR THE FOOD BANK OF THE HUDSON VALLEY
On Thursday, March 29, 2012, Newburgh Free Academy students and staff raised approximately $3,400 during Empty Bowls, an annual event held to benefit the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. Empty Bowls is a national network of volunteer efforts to provide hunger relief.

NFA STUDENTS: COLLEGE NIGHT AT SUNY ORANGE MIDDLETOWN - THIS WEDNESDAY, MAY 2ND

On Wednesday May 2nd from 7PM to 9PM the Orange County Counselor's Association will present College Night at the Suny Orange Physical Education Building in Middletown, NY. NFA COSMETOLOGY STUDENTS BRING THE ‘HAIR’ TO SPRING MUSICAL HAIRSPRAY

Students in Newburgh Free Academy’s Cosmetology program, a facet of the Career and Technical Education Department, put their skills learned in the classroom to use recently by fitting wigs, creating 50's hairstyles and applying make-up for the cast members.

NFA HOSTS ITALIAN EXCHANGE STUDENTS

Recently, three dozen students from Italy visited Newburgh Free Academy as part of a twenty-year-old exchange program between NFA and Liceo Scientifico Ettore Majorana, a high school in Sicily.

ACCOUNTING STUDENTS TRAIN TO BECOME CERTIFIED TAX PREPARERS

Students in George Hoisl’s accounting class at Newburgh Free Academy recently volunteered to be trained, in conjunction with Lillian Evans of Kids Zone VITA, to become certified tax preparers. The organization provides free tax preparation services to low-income members of the Orange County community.

NEWBURGH FREE ACADEMY’S EMPTY BOWLS ANNOUNCED FOR MARCH 29

Dinner Benefits the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. On Thursday, March 29, 2012, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Newburgh Free Academy students and staff will host Empty Bowls to benefit the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. TWO WEEKS LEFT TO SUBMIT SCHOLARSHIPS APPLICATIONS

Local scholarships applications are due to your guidance counselor March 23, 2012 at the latest. In addition, a new scholarship was recently added, #36 on the list.



NFA NORTH THEATRE EMSEMBLE PRESENTS SWEENEY TODD - SCHOOL EDITION
NFA North Theatre Ensemble will present Sweeney Todd School Edition on March 22-24 at 7 pm in the NFA North Auditorium. Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for seniors and children under 12.

NEWBURGH ALUMNUS AND ACCLAIMED SLAM POET SAUL WILLIAMS SURPRISES NFA STUDENTS
As part of the ongoing celebration of Black History Month, students at Newburgh Free Academy were treated to a surprise performance by Newburgh native and slam poet Saul Williams on Tuesday, February 21, 2012.



NFA PROGRESSIVE ACADEMY PARTNERS WITH WEST POINT FOR PROGRAM
On Sat., February 11, 2012, the Newburgh Free Academy Progressive Academy hosted a kick-off luncheon for the ‘Inside-Out Mentoring Program’, with United States Military Academy at West Point cadets, in the Newburgh Free Academy Main Campus Humanities Cafeteria.



NFA SENIORS HONORED DURING ANNUAL TUSKEGEE AIRMEN AWARDS CELEBRATION
On Sat., February 4, 2012, the 14th Annual Tuition Assistance Awards Celebration was held by the Major General Irene Trowell-Harris Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen at Anthony’s Pier 9 in New Windsor.

NFA’S ASTRONOMY CLUB PRESENTS “FOLLOW THE DRINKING GOURD”

“Follow the Drinking Gourd” will take place on Fri., Feb. 24, 2012 at 7PM in the NFA Main Campus Planetarium. The historical story explains how fleeing pre-Civil War slaves used the coded instructions in the American folksong, “Follow the Drinking Gourd”. Tickets are $7/adults and $5/students & seniors. NFA “TEENS AND TOTS” TEACHES STUDENTS REAL WORLD CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND CARE SKILLS

In the doorway of classroom situated on the NFA North Campus, the sound of little voices can be heard laughing and playing as tots eagerly await the arrival of high school students in Rosella Calauti’s Teens and Tots classroom. The Teens and Tots Early Childhood Program is a component of the District's Career and Technical Education Department’s Early Childhood Development and Care program.

SPRING SEMESTER MERCY COLLEGE COURSES

Mercy College registration for the spring semester is now underway. Students enrolled in an AP course this spring are encouraged to sign up for this unique opportunity to earn college credit. Registration forms and course listings can be obtained in your House Guidance Office. The cost of tuition is $50 per credit. Submit your non-refundable payment and registration application to Mrs. Caswell in the Humanities Guidance Office at the Main Campus or Mrs. Rockafellow at the North Campus by Friday, February 10th. SUNY STATEWIDE STUDENT FINANCIAL AID DAYS

As a public service, SUNY is offering two Statewide Student Financial Aid Days: January 21 and February 11. At these events, prospective students and families will receive assistance from SUNY financial aid professionals in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). SUNY is offering SUNY Student Financial Aid Day locally, at Ulster, Rockland and Sullivan County Community Colleges. These events will be held on February 11. These workshops are offered free of charge and are available by registering at www.suny.edu/studentevents.

Midterm Exams have begun in classes. Midterms will be given on the following schedule:
English - January 4 and 5
Social Studies - January 9 and 10
Math - January 12 and 13
Science - January 18 and 19

STUDENTS LEARN SAFE DRIVING SKILLS

NFA North Campus students in Tim Toomey and Mike Truncale’s Criminal Procedures class, part of the Forensics, Security and Law Academy, were recently given the opportunity to utilize two safe-driving simulators provided by Orange County STOP-DWI.

NUTCRACKER BY NFA DANCE DEPARTMENT

The NFA Dance Department presents The Nutcracker on Friday, December 9 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the NFA Main Campus Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for general admission seating and are available by contacting the NFA Bookstore at (845)563-5413 or at the door the night of the show if available.

'TIS THE SEASON' AT NFA PLANETARIUM

The NFA Astronomy Club will presents “Tis the Season” on Fri., Dec. 9, 2011, at 7 p.m. in the NFA Planetarium. The educational show explains how different cultures celebrate light at the darkest time of the year. It has been enjoyed by all ages for many years. Tickets: $7- adults, $5 - students & seniors. NFA YEARBOOKS AVAILABLE FOR ORDERING

All NFA Yearbooks this year must be ordered online at www.jostensyearbooks.com. Order deadline is February 29th, 2012. No money or orders will be taken at the school and their WILL NOT be any year books available for sale in June, you MUST pre-order. You can see the printed order form here, for an idea of what options are available, but orders must still be placed online.

Attention freshman, sophomores and juniors and faculty...never got your school photo taken? You have one more chance! Thursday, November 10, 2011, we will have undergrad make-up pictures at both campuses: the wrestling room at Main and the auditorium at North from 8:30am until 12:30pm only. Go on your free period; if you do not have a free period, see your administrator for a pass to the photographer.



NFA NORTH CAMPUS CELEBRATES TEEN READ WEEK™ WITH BOOK SWAP
Recently, students and teachers from Newburgh Free Academy’s North Campus celebrated Teen Read Week™ with a paperback book swap. Students and teachers traded their personal collections for points, then “purchased” other books that have been donated at the NFA North Campus Library.

COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP

NOTICE FOR SENIORS
When filling out college applications make sure all are complete. Note: SUNY is requesting students self-report grades (through SOAR) this year, but some schools require self-reporting. Request an unofficial copy of your transcript from your counselor if you are self-reporting grades. Accuracy in self-reporting is extremely important.

NFA JV CHEERLEADERS HELP SUPPORT LOCAL FOOD PANTRY
During a recent football game, Newburgh Free Academy Junior Varsity Cheerleaders, thanks to the generosity of Newburgh fans, collected $85 in donations to benefit the St. Francis Food Pantry in Newburgh. The donations were then forwarded to Father John Vondras, the Pastor at St. Francis Church.



LORS STUDIOS: NOVEMBER VISIT FOR SENIOR PORTRAITS - updated
Lors Studio will be at NFA Main Campus to take senior portraits on November 1st – 4th from 9am until 3pm in the wrestling room. NFA HOLDS 2011 HOMECOMING PEP RALLY
Newburgh Free Academy’s Boys’ Gym was a full house adorned with blue and gold balloons and streamers on Weds., Oct. 5, 2011, in honor of the 2011 Homecoming Pep Rally. Students came dressed to show their support for their respective class.



INFORMATION ABOUT ELIGIBILITY FOR STUDENTS TO ATTEND FOOTBALL GAMES
Here at Newburgh Free Academy we value the experiences students gain from student activities such as attending sporting events, dances, pep rallies and various other activities throughout the school year. NFA UPDATES - MERCY COLLEGE, EARLY DISMISSAL, COLLEGE WORKSHOP
Students interested in earning college credit through Mercy College must sign up with their school counselor by Wed., Oct. 12. In addition, on Wed. Oct. 12, NFA will be dismissing student who are NOT taking the PSATs at 11AM. Also on Oct. 12th at 7PM NFA will be holding a "Making the Most of High School" Workshop.

Mercy College Fall 2011 Registration

     The agreement between Mercy College and NFA allows students in selected courses the opportunity to earn college credits for a reduced fee. Students interested in earning college credit through Mercy College must sign up with their school counselor by Wednesday, October 12.

NFA Blood Drive Date Change

The Blood Drive originally scheduled for September 28th will now take place on Thursday, September 22nd. It will be held at NFA Main Campus. Times for the event will be posted soon.
